How claims on this site are made and checked

These are rules the site is built to, not intentions. Each one is checkable against the pages, and the point of publishing them is that you can decide how much weight to put on any given claim without taking our word for it.

One source for every number

Every changeable value on this site — a specification figure, a commercial term, a cited measurement — lives in one place and is rendered in full on exactly one page. Every other page that mentions it references that page rather than restating the value. If you find two pages here disagreeing about a figure, that is an error rather than a nuance, and we would like to be told about it.

Every content page carries a claim ledger

Load-bearing claims are listed in a section of their own, with the basis for each, and each is stated in one of three forms: as fact, as our reasoned position, or as our proposed method. The ledger is the last section before the call to action on every page, so the evidence comes before the pitch rather than after it. A claim that cannot be put into one of those three forms does not go on the page at all.

What we do not publish

A value we cannot source to a document, a named laboratory or a stated measurement is omitted rather than estimated. Where a section is waiting on a value, the section says so in its own words instead of showing a placeholder, a rounded guess or a range wide enough to be safe. That is why several pages tell you plainly what we do not yet know.

Certificates

“Certificate of analysis” on this site means a document with an issuer, a date and a stated test method. We do not use the word “certified” without those three things, and if you find it used without them anywhere here, that is an error. It is also a reasonable standard to hold any other supplier to.

Corrections

Errors are corrected on the page itself and noted in that page’s ledger, rather than removed quietly.
