What is bakhoor charcoal? Bakhoor charcoal (also spelled bukhoor or bahoor charcoal) is a low-heat, odorless charcoal used to gently warm bakhoor (fragrance-soaked wood chips), oud and resin incense on a mabkhara burner. Unlike shisha charcoal, it must burn at a lower, steadier temperature so the fragrance releases instead of scorching. Unlike quick-light discs, it must contain no ignition chemicals, because saltpeter and sulfur fumes taint the scent of expensive oud.
Our factory is specialized. We produce coconut shell charcoal for bakhoor and incense — nothing else. We do not press quick-light tablets, we do not make high-heat shisha cubes, and we do not blend wood, bamboo or sawdust. One raw material, one application, since 2015.

We also avoid wood and bamboo charcoal entirely: coconut shell has higher fixed carbon, lower ash, and none of the wood-smoke odor that competes with a fragrance.
The Product: 100% Coconut Shell Charcoal Briquettes for Bakhoor
Raw coconut shells from Java are carbonized at 600–800 °C, milled, mixed with 1–3% food-grade tapioca starch as the only binder, extruded, and oven-dried. The binder is fully rested and baked — this is what separates odorless charcoal from the cheap briquettes that smell sour when heated. Every production batch is tested for ash, moisture and fixed carbon before it is packed.

Why cheap charcoal smells sour when heated
If your current charcoal smells like burnt potatoes, sour wheat or raw chemicals on the burner, the cause is almost always raw, under-baked tapioca binder — the starch ferments and burns instead of holding the briquette neutrally. We rest and bake the binder completely and carbonize the shell at 600–800 °C, so nothing in the briquette produces a smell. If you are switching suppliers because of this exact problem, request a sample and test it against your current stock on the same burner.

Since 1 January 2026, all coconut charcoal must ship by sea as Dangerous Goods: UN1361, Class 4.2 (Spontaneously Combustible), under IMDG Code Amendment 42-24. The old self-heating-test exemption no longer exists — suppliers still booking containers on outdated SHT certificates are getting rejected by shipping lines. We ship fully compliant: 14-day open-air weathering before packing, packing temperature not exceeding 40 °C, UN-certified packaging, complete DG declaration, and a vanning survey on request.

What is bakhoor charcoal made of?
Real bakhoor charcoal is made of carbonized coconut shell pressed with a small amount of baked tapioca starch binder — nothing else. Ours contains no saltpeter, no sulfur, no wood, no bamboo and no chemical accelerants.
Is your charcoal quick-light?
No. Quick-light discs are coated with saltpeter or sulfur so they ignite from a lighter, and those chemicals taint the fragrance. Our briquettes are 100% natural: they need a proper ignition (electric burner or flame for 3–5 minutes) and then burn clean for 90–120 minutes.
What is the difference between bakhoor charcoal and shisha charcoal?
Shisha charcoal is engineered to hold high heat under tobacco on a hookah; bakhoor charcoal must give lower, steadier heat so oud and bakhoor release fragrance instead of scorching. Both can be made from coconut shell, but the density, sizes and burn profile are different. We manufacture only the bakhoor type.
Do you make shisha or BBQ charcoal?
No. We manufacture coconut shell charcoal for bakhoor and incense only. Shisha charcoal is engineered for high heat under tobacco; BBQ briquettes are a different raw material and market. Specializing in one product is how we keep bakhoor quality consistent.
Why does cheap coconut charcoal smell sour when heated?
Because the tapioca starch binder was not fully rested and baked, so the raw starch ferments and burns. It smells like burnt potatoes or sour wheat and ruins the oud. Our binder is fully baked and every batch is burn-tested before packing.
What is your minimum order?
One 20 ft container — 18 metric tons, FCL. We are a wholesale factory: we do not sell single boxes, pallets or LCL retail quantities, and we have no online shop.
